Earth Regeneration for Climate Balance and a Healthy World –
Ideas of hope and change for Barack and Michelle Obama … and “We the People”
from Don Weaver for World Environment Day, June 5, 2009 and beyond!
An excerpt from Don’s letter:
Dear President and First Lady Obama,
Thank you for bringing a new spirit of compassion, intelligence, and possibility to the White House. I
think many people have been near despair over the direction of the U.S. and the world, and you have
rekindled a lot of hope for positive change around the globe.
I’m writing you this “open letter” to share some vital information and insights arising from my studies
of ecology and health.
I see you’ve already made a start in remineralizing your new White House organic garden! According
to the NewsBlaze.com article (4/11/09), “43 Million American Families to Grow Vegetables in 2009,” Earth Regeneration for Climate Balance and a Healthy World page 4 of 16
your new garden is, along with our “transforming” economy, one of the inspirations behind the
projected 20% increase in food gardens. The article says:
The soil is newly enriched with lime rock dust, greensand, crab meal from the Chesapeake
Bay, and White House compost — biodegradable waste composed of food and paper that is
widely considered a soil conditioner.
Lime and greensand are both types of rock minerals used to build fertility and replenish demineralized
soils, as the crab shell meal and the compost will also help do, so you’ve made an admirable start!
(While it is natural that all living things and natural waste products eventually return to the soils, it is
good to know that healthy garden soils can be built without adding animal manures or slaughterhouse
by products, for those who prefer to avoid them.)
If you’d like additional sources for more and broader-mineral-spectrum mixed rock or gravel dust, one
listing is in the Resources section at www.remineralize.org, and I think every supplier would gladly
donate a generous sample for you to use on the soil and in your compost piles. I’d be happy to request
samples for you; just say “make it so.”
Author Michael Pollan said that the last White House garden planted by Eleanor Roosevelt “inspired a
victory garden movement that led to the creation of 20 million gardens growing some 40% of
America’s fresh produce during the war.” Amazing!
William Bushong of the White House Historical Association said of Mrs. Roosevelt’s garden: “The
soil was too poor to sustain it” (3/20/09 ABC News article, “Foodies Celebrate White House Veggie
Garden”). Now that you’re working with Nature’s methods and materials of fertility creation, you
shouldn’t have that problem!
I read that you have planted one fruit tree, the Marseille fig, which like the heirloom seeds donated by
the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, was one of Jefferson’s favorites. Will you also be planting a White
House orchard? This too would inspire children and adults everywhere to do the same! The world
needs so many more trees for soil and climate stabilization, and the fresh fruits from many millions or
billions more fruit trees can help nourish us beautifully. One organic nursery I know in your area is
Edible Landscaping in Afton, VA. They carry a good selection of fruit trees, berries, grapes, kiwis, and
even tropicals if you have a greenhouse to nurture them.
Along with your own garden’s produce, you might wish to find one or more local organic growers
doing remineralization to supply your family and the White House staff, and why not make the food
available to your cabinet and others in government? Consider the potential value of providing organic
mineralized produce to Congress for healthier functioning of the bodies and brains now being
challenged to solve the country’s biggest problems!
